💡Why We Stay Too Long (In Careers, Relationships, And Kitchen Remodels)

I was talking to a coaching client a couple weeks ago who was feeling totally torn. She’d spent five years in recruiting, but deep down, she knew it wasn’t her forever path. Still… walking away felt hard.

She kept saying:

“How can I pivot now, after all the time I’ve invested?”

Oh, friend. I’ve been there.

I recently made a pivot in my own business that I knew—if I’m honest—I should’ve made 6–12 months earlier.

The data was there. My gut was speaking. But I had poured in years of energy, money, and belief. So I kept trying to make it work way longer than I should have.

It wasn’t the universe testing me to see how committed I was.

It wasn’t patience and grit.

It was the sunk-cost fallacy.

Sunk-cost fallacy is the sneaky human tendency to stay invested in something simply because we’ve already invested so much—even if it’s no longer serving us.

Let’s be real:

Have you ever…

🔹 Stayed in a relationship that no longer aligned, because you were married or had kids or had been together “too long to quit”?

🔹 Pushed a work project across the finish line just to say it was successful—even when the numbers told you otherwise.

🔹 Kept someone on your team long after your gut said they weren’t the right fit?

🔹 Taken the supplements that make you bloated… because you bought a year’s worth on discount?

🔹 Stayed in a home that drains you—because you spent years painting, remodeling, and finding the “perfect” rug?

Then you’ve danced with the sunk-cost fallacy, too.

It’s human. It’s sneaky. And you’re not broken for falling for it.

But here’s the truth:

What got you here isn’t always meant to get you there.

Here’s what to do instead:

✅ Acknowledge the investment.

It mattered. You grew. It taught you something. That counts.

✅ Release the pressure to justify.

You don’t need a dramatic reason to pivot. “It’s no longer aligned” is reason enough. (And, in fact, when we live in alignment–even when it’s hard– magic opens up.)

✅ Get radically honest.

Does this still serve your joy? Your health? Your purpose?

✅ Trust the ROI of boldness.

Every time you honor your truth, the return is priceless—clarity, energy, peace.

So if your gut is whispering—or screaming—that something’s no longer right…

You don’t have to wait until you’re drowning.

You can choose your joy, your peace, your next chapter…

Now.

With love,

Your coach,

💜Sara
