“A Radical Awakening” – My Top Takeaways

Dr. Shefali’s latest book A Radical Awakening: Turn Pain Into Power. Embrace Your Truth. Live Free hit shelves in May. I finished her book yesterday and, as expected, it challenged my edges and expanded my thinking as all good books do!

(Dr. Shefali is one of the most impactful teachers that I’ve studied with and am certified in Conscious Parenting Coaching from.)

Here are a few of the new insights I became present to while listening to her book:

  • How most of my moments of fear and lack and suffering come because I am looking for some sort of validation or approval from others. When I just sit with myself without the need for others to think of me a certain way, all is well… always.
    • I’ve recently termed this my Good Girl Anxiety, a minor anxiousness that’s been present my whole life that I didn’t even realize was there til just recently. An anxiety driven by my need to be the Good Girl, with my Perfect-Girl Mask on, an archetype that helped me comply and fit in when I was a little girl, but no longer serves me now as an adult.
  • While I have integrated and love most of the shadow parts of my past, I do not fully love and accept the parts of me that show up in the present when I have fear, judgement, old patterns resurfacing, etc. I am working on loving and accepting those parts of me as well, and seeing them as my perfectly imperfect humanness.
  • How much I still criticize myself, particularly my body, even though I have shifted a lot of negative self-talk and other false beliefs about myself. (And the fact that it’s a lie that I dress up for myself – I see now how we all dress up for attention from others, and how we women ourselves are perpetuating the ridiculous beauty standards created by the patriarchy to keep their control over us! As we spend time and energy and money to live up to these impossible standards of fake beauty, there’s very little time and energy left over for us women to make our mark on this world.)
  • I very much agree with Dr. Shefali’s view of purpose. In my Mindful Balanced Life Coaching Program that I launched in 2017, we work through deconstructing the layers of our inauthentic masks, false beliefs, victimhood in relationships, etc., and find at the end once all those layers are peeled away, our purpose is right there within us, in the present moment.
