Why You Need Your Own Joyful Pursuit (Especially If You’re A Super Productive Leader)

What do you do that’s just for you?

That fills your cup so you can pour into others?

(I don’t need to tell you that as a leader you constantly have to pour into others.)

What do you do for yourself that’s simply for the pleasure of joy & experience & creativity?

I get hung up on this often. Being driven & in the pursuit of big goals keeps me on the regimented “doing” path.

I fool myself into thinking it’s ok because my work is meaningful (& this is just the path of an entrepreneur, after all, I tell myself).

But then I look up & weeks have passed & I realize I’ve barely been silly with my boys or felt true moments of presence & joy.

Does there always have to be an outcome tied to every action?

My friend told me she recently joined a weekly adult dance class so she could reconnect to something she loved before work & family & adulting took over.

& I love hearing stories about leaders like Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon who for many years EDM DJed on the weekend while he was running the Wall Street behemoth.

I’ve been into poetry lately &, recognizing that I was missing something just for me, signed up for a poetry writing class that starts next week.

I’m terrified… because I’m pretty sure I suck at writing poetry since I haven’t done it since I was a kid.

& I know I’m going to have to be vulnerable & share two works with my classmates.

But I felt the nudge of excitement when I came across the class.

& am eager to have something just for me, that I don’t plan on sharing with anyone (besides my classmates & teacher 😬) & isn’t tied to any business outcome.

If you think having something just for yourself is “for other people but not you” or you neglect to practice regular self-care, there’s likely a part of you that doesn’t feel worthy or good enough to believe you deserve it.

Or maybe that your value is derived from what you achieve & check off your to-do list?

If this rings true for you, I encourage you to read my #1 Amazon bestseller book, The Balanced Life Blueprint.
